What Is Yours

Most conversations about privacy begin with threats. This one begins with what is already yours, and worth keeping.

Privacy is not secrecy

The two get spoken of as though they were the same thing, and they are not. Secrecy conceals something that would carry a cost if known. Privacy decides proportion: who is entitled to know what, and on whose terms.

Every functioning family runs on that distinction already. Your children do not read your correspondence with counsel. Your household staff do not attend board meetings. Nobody considers this suspicious. It is simply the ordinary architecture of a life, and it predates every device in your house.

What has changed is not the principle. It is that the architecture no longer holds itself up.

The people who did not choose this

You may have chosen a public company, a political office, a visible career. Your daughter did not. Nor did the parent now living with you, or the spouse who married a person rather than a profile.

A child born into a recognisable name inherits a visibility they never agreed to and cannot resign from. They will be searched by classmates, by a first employer, by the parents of a friend. The question of what the internet says about a fourteen-year-old is answered years before she is old enough to have an opinion about it.

Much of our work, in practice, is about people who are not our client.

The cost of living tactically

Families under sustained exposure begin to adapt in small ways. A restaurant chosen for its exits. A photograph not taken. A school event skipped. A sentence left unsaid on a call because nobody is certain who else is on it.

Individually these are minor. Cumulatively they are a tax on ordinary life, paid daily, mostly by the people around you rather than by you. The purpose of doing this work properly is not to add another layer of vigilance. It is to remove the need for it, so that a family can go back to making decisions for ordinary reasons.

What we assume about you

That you are not required to justify wanting this. Discretion is not evidence of anything, and a person who asks for it is not asking to be treated as a suspect first.

That the answer is specific to you. A judge, a founder, a family with adult children in three countries, a journalist working on something difficult; these are entirely different situations that happen to share a vocabulary.

And that none of this exists outside the law. We work within it, deliberately and on the record. Legitimate privacy needs no exemption from legal process, and we do not offer one. What we do is make sure that what is yours is disclosed by you, to whom you choose, at the moment you choose.

The quiet, restored

The outcome people describe, when the work has gone well, is rarely technical. It is that their surname stopped arriving in rooms before they did. That a family holiday was simply a holiday. That an address went back to being a place they live rather than a piece of information in circulation.

That is what is actually being protected here. Not data. The quiet around the people closest to you.
